BEST NEW GADGETS
A look at this year's hottest new tech items. Attending the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with Panasonic gave me the amazing opportunity to preview the latest and greatest new electronics. Here is a rundown of some of the best new items to watch out for. The new Blu-Ray Portable Player from Panasonic (DMP-B15) will not debut until May – but it’s worth the wait. With an 8.9” notebook-sized screen, an Ethernet port, and the ability to take it with you on the go, travel will soon seem a lot more enjoyable! In fact, I travel so much that I think I’d prefer to have a blu-ray player to take with my on the plane or train instead of one in my living room (sure to be monopolized by my two teenagers!). When it comes to enjoying movies and TV shows on the go, another great gadget is the MyVu Personal Media Viewer from the MyVu Corporation, an innovative company located not far from me in Massachusetts. Thanks to exceptionally advanced technology, these high-tech looking glasses allow you to view videos from your portable media player or cell phone as if you were watching on a huge screen. Click here to read a review of the Crystal glasses I tried out or visit the MyVu website for more information. Of course, when it comes to your mp3 player, you probably still spend most of your time listening to music, which makes the new KOSS Stereophones worth mentioning. The comfortable earbud style headphones solve a problem so many others seem to have – actually fitting your ear! (How many times have you bought a pair, only to have to hand them off to your husband or tween when they ended up being too big or too small?) The ingenious design allows you to turn a little knob and adjust the size of the rubber earpiece to fit your ear perfectly – making them extremely comfortable and providing great sound quality. For more information, visit the Koss website.Panasonic also recently unveiled the SDR-SW20 video camera, which combines great technology and ease of use to make it the perfect at-home camcorder. Retailing for $380, the camera has a built-in microphone and 10x optical zoom, but the best part about it has nothing to do with its great sound and picture quality. The camcorder is shock-, water-, and dustproof, which means it can stand up to everything from adventurous family vacations to curious toddlers. Another way to capture great family memories is with the Edirol R-09HR mp3 recorder by Roland. This lightweight, handheld audio recorder produces exceptionally high quality recordings whether you want to capture your child’s presentation in front of the class, record a piano recital, or your kids want to cut studio quality jazz band music in the garage. Plus, if you want a really incredible memory, take this audio recorder, sit down with Grandma, and have her recount family stories. For more, visit the Edirol website. Video games seem to improve every day, and Microsoft has created a new one that gets the whole family involved. Lips for Xbox 360 allows you to live out your rock star fantasies thanks to wireless microphones and a great collection of music. The game, which comes with 2 microphones, allows you to sing everything from the Jackson 5 to Coldplay, personalize the game with your own music, and get new songs and updates through Xbox Live. With your regular controllers, 4 other players can also get involved by simulating percussion instruments, making the game entertaining even for a crowd. And trust me - karaoke in your living room makes for the perfect family night. For more information, visit the Xbox website. The Smartphone has earned its place as one piece of technology that really becomes necessary for any working mom, and Microsoft recently introduced three new ones that can help even the busiest moms organize their lives. The new phones, the Samsung Omnia, the LG Incite, and the HTC Touch Pro, are all lightweight, sleek, and packed with amazing features. All include Microsoft Office Mobile and Media Player, Direct Push Email, internal memory, a camera, GPS, wi-fi, and Bluetooth connectivity. The touch screen makes the phones both simple and fun to use. Overall, these phones are as functional as they are stylish and convenient – exactly what a mom wants.
